UPDATE: Sharon Township and Worthington Reach Agreement on Joint Fire District Levy

The Sharon Township Board of Trustees concluded its negotiations with the City of Worthington regarding the City’s request for an increase in the funds provided by the Township for the operation of the Joint Fire District. In late 2022, the City sent a request to the Township for an increase to $1,010,000 per year. The City made the request under an agreement entered in 1993 for the operation of a joint fire district.

The Township currently pays to the City approximately $164,000 per year for fire and EMS services under a property tax levy that has remained unchanged for 30 years.

The Township and the City agreed to enter negotiations, and after several months of meetings, reached an agreement on the request of Township residents. Under the agreement, the Township will place a levy on the November 2023 ballot to raise the annual amount to $500,000. In three to five years, the Township will go back to residents for an additional, scaled increase.

The Township will have information sessions for residents in the upcoming months to provide additional details.

HALLOWEEN 2023

Mark your calendars that Halloween Trick or Treat will take place in Sharon Township on Tuesday, October 31st from 6pm to 8pm. Have fun and be safe!

NATIONAL PRESCRIPTION DRUG TAKE-BACK DAY IS SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28TH….

The Sharon Township Police Department will again take part in the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take-Back Initiative on Saturday, October 28th, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Sharon Township Police Department 95 E. Wilson Bridge Road Worthington, Ohio 43085.

We cannot take any prescription drugs prior to or after that date and time.  We will be collecting potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.   We CANNOT collect liquids, needles, patches, or inhalers.  It is preferred that you empty all of your pills from its container into a clear plastic bag. It is recommended that you keep the containers and dispose of them yourself to protect your identity.

How to Dispose of Medicines Properly:

Don’t: Flush expired or unwanted prescription and over-the-counter drugs down the toilet or drain unless the label or accompanying patient information specifically instructs you to do so.

Do: Return unwanted or expired prescription and over-the-counter drugs to a drug take-back program or follow the steps for household disposal below.

1ST CHOICE: DRUG TAKE-BACK EVENTS… Such as the one scheduled for October 28th

2ND CHOICE: HOUSEHOLD DISPOSAL STEPS (Drug Disposal Guidelines, Office of National Drug Police, October 2009):

  1. Take your prescription drugs out of their original containers.
  2. Mix drugs with an undesirable substance, such as cat litter or used coffee grounds.
  3. Put the mixture into a disposable container with a lid, such as an empty margarines tub, or into a sealable bag.
  4. Conceal or remove any personal information, including Rx number, on the empty containers by covering it with a permanent marker or duct tape, or by scratching it off.
  5. The concealed container with the drug mixture, and the empty drug containers, can now be placed in the trash.

How Proper Disposal of Medicines Protects You and the Earth: Prevents poisoning of children and pets; Deters misuse by teenagers and adults; Avoids health problems from accidentally taking the wrong medicine, too much of the same medicine, or a medicine that is too old to work well; Keeps medicines from entering streams and rivers when poured down the drain or flushed down the toilet.

FIRE DEPARTMENT EDUCATION EVENT FOR RESIDENTS ON OCTOBER 4TH / FIRE LEVY ON BALLOT

The Worthington Fire Department has graciously agreed to host an open house at the fire station so residents can learn more about what the fire department does for the Township, and to answer any questions the residents may have about the Fire Department.

  *   Please join us on October 4th at 6:30PM at 6500 N. High St. in Worthington for a great discussion, presentation, and open house.

The Board of Trustees publicly voted to place a fire levy on the November 7, 2023 ballot after over a year of public discussion and input. The Board of Trustees was required to put a levy on the ballot pursuant to the existing fire contract which was recently amended after negotiations with the City of Worthington.

The levy, if passed, would raise an annual amount of $500,000, and specifically would add 4.06 mills in additional taxes, or approximately $142.00 for each $100,000 of the county auditor’s current appraised value.  Note the county auditor’s current proposed valuations of our homes will not be used as the valuations for the November fire levy.

This communication, and the fire department open house, is not intended to seek support or opposition for the fire levy and both are for informational purposes only.  It is important we provide you with factual information about the levy, the services you receive, and we are available to do so.

We look forward to seeing you at the fire department on October 4th!

Hydrant Flushing

Week of April 26 – Worthington south of Dublin Granville Road, east of High Street and Sharon Township south of Worthington

Annual Spring Fire Hydrant Preventative Maintenance and Flushing Program The Worthington Division of Fire & EMS conducts annual fire hydrant preventative maintenance programming in the spring of each year. During the inspection process, firefighters will be opening and flowing water from the hydrants, which may cause a temporary lower pressure than normal and temporary discoloration of your water. You should not wash clothes when the water is discolored. . The firefighters will do their best to stay within the schedule, however, weather and calls for emergency service may cause some slight deviations.

If you have any questions or want updates on progression, please call the fire station at 614-885-7640

Water Quality Tips: On the date(s) we may be on your street or in your area avoid doing any laundry, cleaning, cooking, etc. until after flushing is complete and water quality returns to normal. We also recommend you avoid drinking the tap water until it is free of sediment. You can check the water by simply running your tap and filling a glass to make certain no visible sediment, rust, or discoloration is present. Normally water quality returns to normal within a few hours after flushing. If it does not, running taps within your home may help restore water quality more quickly. If you accidentally wash or stain laundry with rusty water, DO NOT DRY THE CLOTHING. Go to your local home supply store or grocery where you can purchase cleaning agents designed to remove such stains and re-wash the items per package directions. We do not stock rust removal agents/detergents for residents and can offer no further assistance than the information on this page.

The hydrants in Worthington Hills are checked and serviced by Aqua Ohio. You may contact them directly for flushing date(s). Aqua Ohio customer service can be reached by calling 877-987-2782.

Updated Trash Contract

The Township’s current trash contract with Local Waste expired at the end of this 2020.  The Township joined a consortium of seven other communities to bid out our trash contract to seek the best price and service.  Local Waste again won the consortium bid as the lowest price vendor and Rumpke of Ohio was selected to handle the recyclables.   Our Board of Trustees approved the contracts with Local Waste and Rumpke after several months of discussion on our agenda.

Local Waste will be providing the same services to our residents and will collect all solid waste, recyclables and yard waste.   Local Waste will transport the recyclables to Rumpke.  Importantly, the collection day will not change- it is still on Monday.  The costs to our residents will be $19.39 per month and Local Waste will charge a $1.80 quarterly fee for billing.  Local Waste is required to provide our residents who are 60 years of age or older a discount of 10% or $1.50, whichever is greater.

Local Waste has been a good partner with the Township for years and has been responsive when issues arise.  Please let us know if you have any questions or issues to ensure our service remains strong.
